“Against the ruin
of the world, there is only one defense — the creative act.”
Kenneth Rexroth is
my hero for these words of wisdom, if for nothing else … although the more I learn
about him the more I wish I could road trip with him and experience part of the
world through his eyes … or at least sit down and have a cup of coffee with him.
But that’s not
going to happen, so instead - against the ruin of my worlds - I get creative.
With video, with beads, with paint and paper, with my thoughts and actions. Anything
that expends my energy into something real – tangible or not.
I am half Egyptian and half Jordanian, though I was born in
Libya and raised in America. While I was living in London I discovered India,
which I return to over and over again – by plane and in my dreams. Although
I’ve been based in Amman since 2001, my spoken Arabic is terrible, but I
understand almost everything - which makes me a great listener. And I travel so
much it’s hard to know where to call home. Which suits me just fine.
I have a BA from New York
University and work mainly as a filmmaker, writer and actor, although I
indulge in other things as well. I’ve been active in the American, UK,
and Jordanian film, television and
theatre industries since 1988. Behind the scenes I’ve worked in various
roles
with Warner Brothers, Disney, ABC and HBO as well as my own and other
independent short films, music videos and documentaries. In front of
the camera
I’ve acted under the direction of Stanley Kubrick, Oliver Hirschbeigel,
Spike
Lee and many others, as well as in British and American television
programmes.
In addition to several feature and short film scripts, I also write
articles
which have appeared in British and Jordanian publications.
I speak enough
Arabic to get what I need and sometimes what I want, practice yoga, want to
live on a beach someday, love making things with my hands as long as it doesn’t
involve food, travel a lot because I love it and it’s the only way I can learn
what I need to learn to live in this world, and am always on the
lookout for kindred spirits ... [nudge, nudge, wink, wink] |
